FAQ's for Community Service Volunteers
What kind of commitment am I required to make as a tutor?
We ask
that each tutor be willing to meet consistently with their student
either on Monday evenings, Tuesday evenings, or both. In addition,
we ask that tutors contact their students before each session to confirm
and encourage the student’s attendance. The program runs throughout
the school year and has a summer break.
How do the tutoring sessions
actually work?
Each new tutor will be assigned a student. Students
work with their tutors in on-to-one pairs and remain in the same pair
throughout the year. The tutor’s task is first to get to know the student.
Ages range from early elementary school through high school, and
while the kids attend different schools, they are all from Marin City.
The program meets in a group setting, but tutors are paired one-to-one
with students.
What sort of work will we do?
Reading comprehension
is key to a child's academic success. Tutors can use the wide range
of books and materials Bridge the Gap has available, including fiction
and non-fiction readings, mathematics, and problem-solving challenges.
Tutors will also assist students with homework. If a tutor has difficulty
selecting work that is appropriate for the abilities of her student,
the Bridge The Gap on-site teachers can provide suggestions. In addition
tutors can expect to receive help with general strategies for teaching
reading and other basic skills to their students.
Can I get more involved
with a student than the one-hour per week of tutoring?
With the knowledge and permission of the parents, many of our
tutors develop relationships with their students outside of the weekly
sessions. While such a commitment is by no means a requirement, giving
extra time is not prohibited.
